philz: Coconut cake. Mmm. My mother (Mommy) makes me a coconut cream pie every year for my birthday. It was a recipe that her mother (my grandmother) made for me when I was very young. Poppy seed cookies, strudel, and pineapple cake are still some of my favorites. For some reason, I can't get the breaded veal cutlets out of my head. comment left May 12 |

Ann2443: My late mother was an excellent cook, and three of her dishes linger on my tongue more than three decades after her death. Her scalloped oysters were always an important part of winter holiday dinners. I wanted to make them as a tribute for Christmas dinner the first year after she died. I was surprised and chagrined to find the recipe lived only in her head, not in the recipe box. Likewise, the opera fudge ingredients weren't written down, either! Happily, I have been able to make the fresh coconut cake that ended every Easter dinner and was carried as an eagerly awaited hostess gift when we were invited out. The advent of the food processor has made that prep far easier for me than it was for her. comment left May 11 |
