	Cynthia: Funny. I hadn't thought of it for a while, but one of my big complaints about energy bars is that most of them are horrifically sweet. Why can't someone make a cheddar-flavored energy bar. Or ranch? It can't be that much harder. comment left Aug 31
	Cynthia: Of course, before I was 'old enough to eat chocolate" (something my mom convinced me of when I was little -- hierarchy of candy -- Necco wafers for little kids, then Milk Duds, but Hershey bars were for grown ups), I loved SweeTarts and Bit O'Honey. Then later, Charleston Chew, because you could put it in the freezer and then smacked it and it would shatter, which seemed oddly wonderful. But that was then -- and even as a teen, when others stopped for candy during the walk home from school, I'd usually opt for Budig's chipped beef or a package of cheese. I can go a long time without sweets, and rarely order dessert (nice flavored coffee or a glass of good dessert wine is nice, however). I usually have dark chocolate in the house, but binge food is chips and dip -- or almost anything else with salt on it. comment left Aug 31
	philz: Cheese over chocolate for me, too. Seems like we have lots of salts with Payday preference, here. Funny I never had a Payday when I was a kid. I guess they weren't nationally distributed until 1967 when the company that made them, Hollywood Foods, was bought by Consolidated Foods. There was something about the Planter's bar though. It was thin and flat. It cracked and broke into random sized pieces, each one a portion surprise. I'd eat through the small ones and leave the big ones for last. Seemed to last longer that way. Payday seems softer and more bar-like. You eat it from one end to the other. Boring. comment left Aug 31
	Cynthia: Yeah -- I'm definitely in the salty camp, too -- and loved Payday as a kid. But I love chocolate, as well -- though dark chocolate -- like 70 percent. However, if I had to make a choice between, say, chocolate and cheese, cheese would win. As for Hershey bars in Canada -- I wonder if they're made like Cadbury bars. I went to a lecture once given by someone from Cadbury, and they said the reasons Americans find Cadbury chocolate too sweet is that it's made with sweet milk, while Hershey bars are made with sour milk. As soon as she said it, I could taste it in my mind -- that sour note in the background of a Hershey bar. So no proof, but I'd imagine most in Canada would tend to be more familiar with Cadbury, and therefore perhaps Hershey accommodates this in Canada. (Coke has different formulas for different countries, so not unimaginable.) comment left Aug 31
	vcurran: Phil, I agree with your comment on sweet vs. salty preferences. I guess I'm a salt freak, for the same reason as Papa Bear: when I was a kid my favorite candy bar was Payday (what the heck is nougat, anyway?). I still prefer salty food, though like you, I've sworn off the Payday bars on the advice of my dentist. comment left Aug 30
	robmhill: salty/ sweet is great. I like the american hershey's too, it has been reformulated and can not be called milk chocolate anymore, but it still tastes good, and has a distinct flavour. It has a very tiny amount of coffee in it to enhance the chocolate flavour. comment left Aug 30

	mypapabear64: i have to agree with philz you are either a salt or a sweet unless you happen to be me. my all-time favorite candybar hands down would have to be a payday bar i just love the salty peanuts and i adore the chewy middle but what i do to it even befor i eat it man now that is something.....i cover mine in milk chocolate top to bottom and side to side... i let mine firm up and when you bite that i have to tell ya it just makes the eye balls roll straight up into your head..... it is just heavenly.... try it just once as always your friend in food papabear comment left Aug 30
	philz: Does anyone else believe that that world is divided into sweet and salt people? I'm a salt and my candy bar is the Planter's Peanut Bar. Crunchy and salty, I've had to give it up in later years, because it is not tooth-friendly. comment left Aug 30

	robmhill: 10:30 bar but it does not exist any more. I used to buy them when I would go to Boston as a kid, I would go to museums and stuff on my own, and there was on subway station that had a news-stand that sold them, so I would stop there and buy one or two. They were sort of white chocolate, with maraschino cherry bits and crisp. Very sweet. They have these chocolate eggs in Turkiye that have a toy inside, called Totto's. They are better than the ones here and in europe because the toys are intricate, and difficult to put together. They are illegal here because of all the small pieces, the Turks we know think this is funny, they say just don't give them to small children right? When we are there, we buy two every night and take them back to the hotel. The chocolate is quite edible, not too sweet for that sort of chocolate. comment left Aug 30
